Living in the UK we all know that we are not always guaranteed a sunny summer, so lets look at why vitamin D is important and ways we can boost our vitamin D to keep us happy and healthy.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, it’s essential for healthy teeth and gums.

Vitamin D is important for general health and oral health: key to forming enamel, dentine and oral bones.

It is advised to get 20-30 minutes of sun exposure 2-3 times per week, avoid overuse of sun cream and avoid burning

Adults and children over 1 year should take daily supplementation: 10mcg Vitamin D

Infants under 1 year who are breastfed or consuming less than 500ml formula milk a day are advised to take daily vitamin D supplementation: 8.5-10mcg/day.

You can also boost your vitamin D with the following foods:

  • oily fish - such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackrel
  • red meat
  • egg yolks

In the UK, cow’ milk is generally

not a good source of vitamin D because it is not fortified, as it is in some countries.
